Countdown to Gold Coast
I was at a
coffee shop yesterday when I noticed a small sign that said
"Stressed spelt backwards is Desserts." I must confess, I have
had my fair share of stress in certain parts of my life over the
years and at times it crept into my running.
Jogging up to the track in
Canberra in a heat wave only to stare down the neck of 10
torturous 400's, many a time I had the feeling of, "Can't wait
until I have got this out of the way and the session finished."
"Attempting" to
leave my mark yet once again
Don't get me wrong, we had heaps
of fun though. I remember the time
Shaun Creighton and I were warming up for a track session
and we passed some wet cement. Fuelled by my eternal mission to
leave my mark in this world, I stopped at the recently laid path
and called Shaun back. "What's up mate?" said Shaun. I replied
with, "Well Shaun there are going to be hundreds of athletes
coming here to the Institute on scholarship in the years to come
and they will all be running over this stretch of ground. How
about we leave our mark?"
Unfortunately we were sprung. It
was very difficult being a grown man trying to justify to the
guy who has just laid the cement that you were leaving your mark
as a remembrance of all the times you ran there. He was not
impressed!
The bare facts
Then, there was the time that we
were all out on a 2-½ hour run in
Stromlo Forest. The conversation in the group was waning so
I took off and got a decent break on the group. After I rounded
a corner I stripped off to just shoes and socks and charged up
Bleuitt Pines Hill. About half way up the mile long hill, with
my cremaster muscle working overtime, I was giggling to myself
at the site the half a dozen guys behind me would have had.
All for one and one for all
When
I glanced around, I was shocked to find all of them completely naked
also. Harmless stuff I can assure you as we were out in the
middle of nowhere. It became tradition to the extent that every
Sunday when we got to the base of Bleuitt Pines Hill, the gear
would come off, often without a soul prompting the act.
Running should not be a chore
I can recall back twenty-odd years
ago when I met a group of runners for a 2 ½ Hour run in
Brisbane. We were only 10 min into the run when this guy looked
at his watch and said in a negative tone, "Well 10 min down,
only 2hrs and 20min to go." It annoyed me for he obviously was
not enjoying what he was doing and I questioned to myself why he
was there.
