3k Challenge Perpetual Trophy
(trophy will be permanently kept @
InTraining)
The
inaugural ‘Brisbane Running Group 3k Challenge’ was a huge
success. Runners are already asking when the next 3K Challenge
will take place.
Six teams
took part which brought together 122 runners.
The
Riverside Drive/South Bank venue is a true winner and we will
use this course for future events.

There are
four main reasons the 3K Challenge was instigated:
-
To allow
running groups the opportunity to compare the depth of their
group against other running groups. Depth being the ability
throughout the group as well as the strength of the group in
numbers.
-
To allow
runners the opportunity to run as a team.
-
To have
a scoring system whereby the 30th team members
performance is as equally as crucial to the teams outcome as
the first team members performance.
-
A
fun/social event.
NB:
A running group is defined as a group of runners who
REGULARLY train together.

The
Regatta Runners were initially awarded the 3K Challenge trophy
and deemed the overall winners as a result of how they performed
in the 20+ category.
In
reflection, & with due respect, nominating the 20+ category as
the main category seemed to some people as an error of
judgment.
Nominating
the 20+ category contradicts one of the main reasons the
challenge was instigated: To allow running groups the
opportunity to compare the depth of their group against other
running groups. Depth being the ability throughout the group as
well as the strength of the group in numbers.

It has
since been decided that the 3K Challenge Trophy will carry the
names of the running groups who won each of the 4 categories.
This being 15+/20+/25+ and 30+.
The
winning teams therefore being:
15+ Regatta Runners
20+ Regatta Runners
25+ Pat Carroll Running Group
30+ Pat Carroll Running Group
The fact
that each category carries equal weight will alleviate the
necessity, in future, for a running group to feel pressured to
recruit runners who do not regularly train with them.

The
outcome of the 3K Challenge proved to be extremely close.
In the
15+ category there was only 9sec separating the top
two teams.
In the 20+ category there was only 5sec separating
the top two teams.
In the 25+ category there was only 9sec separating
the top two teams.
The above
stats clearly indicate that every second a runner can pick up
can ultimately decide their team’s outcome.

the finish line and compiling the results.

P.S Surely
life is too short to get upset about a middle aged/ x elite
athlete standing
on the back of your ute!
