Pace runners required
There is no denying the beginning of the New Year encourages
time for reflecting on the past 12 months and planning for the
year ahead. I must confess, however, I was not always diligent
in planning out my training and races in advance. At times I was
easily distracted and found myself in races that were not ideal
and did not fit in with the big picture.
The more I become involved with my online clients the more I
discover the importance of locking in short term and long term
goals and identifying specific training blocks in the interim.
Lock in your 2007 goals
Therefore, I suggest it is time to map out your 2007 running
year and lock in your races/goals. Having something in the
distance (a goal) provides motivation and an extra reason to get
out of the door.
The
Canberra Marathon on the 15th of April is the
first major event on the Australian distance running calendar
that I recommend.
The event comprises of a 5km and 10km fun run on Saturday
afternoon and the Marathon on the following day. If 42.195km is
not quite far enough for you, there is also a 50km option on
Sunday.
My reason for suggesting Canberra as your first major goal for
the year is based on the following:
1)
The course is fast. The 2004 Canberra Marathon
produced the fastest time run by a male in any Marathon in
Australia for the year (Martin Dent, 2.15.12) and 2003 the
fastest female time in Australia for the year (Nyla Carroll,
2.38.56).
2)
Canberra in April provides weather conditions unmatched in Australia, perfect for distance running.
3)
Race Director: Dave Cundy. Dave has been the race
director since year dot and runs the event with meticulous
precision. Dave was also the race director for 2000 Host City
and Olympic Marathons and also the 2007 Great Wall Marathon. Dave is a former Marathon runner come
recreational runner, an essential qualification for any race
director.
4)
It is positioned well on the calendar and allows
11 weeks to recover and build your fitness and train up for the
Gold Coast Airport Marathon and associated events.
You can fly almost anywhere in Australia in our current climate
for a few hundred dollars return as long as you book far enough
in advance. So if your budget is not totally blown from buying
Christmas presents you may want to consider locking Canberra
in.
The Countdown is on, less than 13 weeks to go!
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require a training
program and assistance in mapping out your 2007 running year. If
Canberra is on the agenda, now is the time to get cracking, less
than 13 weeks to go.
Cheers
Pat
