Consistency
It was sad to hear that the recent female winner of the Hawaiian
Ironman tested positive for drugs (EPO). Recently there was an
Irish distance runner who broke National records at 5000 and
10,000 metres who also went positive for drugs (EPO) and was
henceforth dropped from the Irish Olympic Team. This guy, after
being caught, came out and said; "Yep, to be sure to be sure,
you got me and I now want to join the fight against drugs in
sport". I hope they throw the boooooook (that's Irish for book)
at him.
The two Greek sprinters of the 2004 Olympics rate just behind
`Kath and Kim' as the best comedy duos for 2004.
How will drug cheats feel in their ageing years?
Taking illegal performance enhancing drugs, to me, seems an
extremely shallow way to go about achieving your goals and I
often wonder how the undetected cheats are going to look back on
their achievements when they are in their final years. Surely
they will carry an enormous amount of guilt and possibly in the
future some may eventually admit wrong about how they were `not
clean'.
I never entertained the thought of taking performance enhancing
drugs and I rest assure that my peers in Australia at the time
were the same.
"I was always a slave to my training diary"
I was always a slave to my training diary. Every Sunday night I
would tally up the kms I had run that week and look back through
my diary at the continual 180 plus km weeks that I had
(hopefully) been ploughing through in my current campaign (since
my latest Marathon). The fact that I had numerous uninterrupted
weeks of training under my belt provided me with ample
confidence. As the weeks ticked by I knew I was getting
stronger.
Important to keep ticking over
With summer creeping up on us in Australia, it may be testing at
times to complete your training. Let's face it; running is not
all that enjoyable when the mercury rises. Your longer runs may
be reduced; however it is important to keep your sessions ticking over.
For those of you who are aiming for the Gold Coast next year we
are already counting down - less than 32 weeks to go. If you
want to achieve what you are capable of then your training
should be an ongoing process, consistency.
A 10-12 week preparation will get you across the line. It won't
produce a result you are fully capable of though.
