2006 Gold Coast Airport Marathon
Feedback from David Willems
Over the years I have always run the Marathon with a mate and
stayed away from the sub 3 group. Always favoured running my own
race, and have on 2 occasions run under 3 hours. But yesterday I
took 3 of my guys who I coach along for the ride and decided to
run in your group.
I
did however hesitate at first, as I have met you a couple of
times and felt you were a bit reserved and didn't get a welcome
that I was probably looking for.
Well yesterday I saw a different side to Pat Carroll. It was the
most inspiring exhibition of running leadership I have ever come
across. The first chat that you gave at 5klm came unexpected
from me, but it was to set a platform that did not faulter
throughout the entire run. The ear full that you were giving us
was just what we needed at the right time.
The
best being with 40mins to go, in relation to being with your
ex-wife for 14years of trying times, we only have 40mins of hell
to achieve our goal. Well for me it was 40mins of hell. But
there is nothing better then going through the hell and coming
out the other
side.
My
eyes were shut from 39k, I had more spit on my face then I could
carry, I had tears rolling down my face that I had to hide with
my hat. With 400m to go it all went away, my stride came back,
my head was held high and a
high 5 from you to run under the clock at 2.57, was one of my
finest moments, and that is saying something after the stuff
that I have done over the years.
With my limited preparation I should have never run that time.
That group got me there. I dug deeper in that race than ever
before. And you would know, THERE IS NOTHING BETTER.
UNLESS YOU TEST YOURSELF, YOU STAGNATE.

Congratulations David
