I have often observed the
atmosphere within our running group before and after a
session. An environment which starts at 5.30am with most in a
solemn mood evolves in the hour into a group of runners filled
with zest. Running definitely makes us all feel good about
ourselves. The buzz you receive from running well in a training
session usually stays with you for the best part of the same
day, unfortunately the feeling does not stay with you forever.
Euphoric state
Running well in an event you have
spent months preparing for, brings a feeling which far exceeds
any high a training session may bring. We are all familiar with
the saying, “It feels like all my Christmas’s and birthdays have
come at once”. That is the exact euphoric state you experience
when you achieve a challenging goal in running. But this type of
high stays with you for weeks and for the remainder of your life
you have the privilege to be able to tap into your memory and
relive your achievement.
Back in my trying days.....
Back in my trying days when I
worked in an office there was a fellow work colleague on a
weight loss program. As a motivating factor this lady
permanently took ownership of a section of the office white
board and wrote down, for the entire world to see, her weight
along with the goal weight she wished to achieve in 10 weeks
time. Each day Sally would come to work and write her weight on
the board. It was a brave move however having to honestly record
her weight gave Sally’s mission more accountability and ensured
success.
I would often lock in two goals
I would often go into a race with
an A and B goal in mind. If my personal best going into a
Marathon was 2.15 I would set myself goal A - to run SUB
2.12 and goal B - to run SUB 2.15. Having two goals enables you
to set a challenging goal along with a back up plan which should
still involve considerable effort.
You may set yourself goal A - to
run SUB 3.30 for the Marathon and goal B - to finish. Your Half
Marathon may involve goal A - to break 2 hrs and goal B - to
break 2.10. Possibly you have never run a Marathon before and your
sole goal may be to cover the 42.2km.
I will post your goal on my site
I have established a link on my
GROUP RUNS page which will display, for anyone interested to be
involved, individual A and B goals for either the 10k, Half
Marathon or Marathon at the Coast. If you would like to have
your name along with your A and B goals for your event posted on
my site simply fill out the form below.
Forwarding your goals to me for
all the world to see, just like Sally did, not only gives you an
extra reason to dig deep on the Coast but also an opportunity
for you to give thought to how much you are going to apply
yourself at the next group session in order for
you to obtain one of the best highs life has to offer.
