Stretching should create a feeling of tension in  muscle being stretched…and should not be painful.

  • Each stretch should be held for at least 30 seconds. You should not bounce or stretch ballistically

  • You can repeat each stretch 3-5 times. As you repeat stretches the amount of muscle tension felt will ease

  • During stretching sessions you should relax and breathe normally

  • Your complete stretching routine can take as little as 10 minutes or last as long as 1 hour. It is best to perform your flexibility routine as a separate exercise session and after either some light form of activity ie after your muscles are warm or at the end of the day

  • If you have been inactive, had recent injury or surgery or wish to have a personal flexibility program designed you should consult your physio

Pocket Physio

Have you ever experienced muscle tightness that cannot be relieved by stretching?

The Pocket physio was developed by Physiotherapists as a simple inexpensive tool to release muscle tension.

‘Trigger Points’ are specific areas within muscles that cause increased muscle tightness and occasionally, referred pain. The pictures, which accompany this tool show simple ways of using the pocket physio to self, manage or treat these points.

Early recognition of the onset of muscle tightness by regular use of the pocket physio is an effective way to prevent further muscle tightness and the possibility of injury.

What to Expect:

Once you find a trigger point by positioning the ball as described…
  • You will feel initial discomfort and possibly radiating pain

  • This will ease after approximately 1-2 minute

  • Continue to move the pocket physio on each point until your discomfort ease - your muscle is beginning to relax

  • Repeating this over a period will assist in removing painful muscle tension

  • Move to a new trigger point following the guide

What is a trigger point:

As a result of in most cases relatively minor trauma or muscle overuse people can develop hyperirritable spots or “Trigger Points” within tight bands of muscle or fascia.

These points are most often painful on compression with palpation and can give rise to referred pain, local muscle tenderness and occasional autonomic nervous system symptoms - coldness, burning or stinging.

Trigger Points can be:

  • Deep or achy

  • Cause decreased ranges of motion

  • Often be limited to one area of the body

Palpation will reveal:

  • Either a knotty or doughy area in a muscle

  • A twitch response…sudden pain with palpation

  • Latent pain…pain following sustained pressure i.e. after one minute.

Posture Pro

Physiotherapists, massage therapists and many other allied health professionals provide “hands on” treatment for a variety of back conditions. For many years these health professionals have suggested the use of simple devices such either tennis or rubber balls to assist in relieving back pain.

Posture Pro is a simple tool designed by physiotherapists which helps relieve the symptoms of back pain caused by muscle tightness and poor posture. Its role is to help prevent back stiffness and assist in injury recovery.

Injury treatment programs generally include simple exercises which encourage continued improvement as well as prevention strategies which help stop problems recurring. Treatment for most conditions should not cease once you leave the clinic. Posture Pro is ideal for this purpose! Use at home or at work to provide relief from the symptoms of prolonged sitting or standing.

Posture should be used when you are feeling discomfort between your shoulder blades or as a means of preventing back tightness or stiffness. It is most often used either in lying or standing. It is ideal for use following sitting for long periods of time eg after driving your car, sitting at a desk, flying in an airplane, watching a movie or following sports such as: bike riding, or playing football.
