    ASICS HALF MARATHON 2004

Through the eyes of Tamyka Bell

I thought it was very cool (the motivational talk), I liked the prizes at the beginning, I liked the y-fronts and the fact that the auction got more involved.

"You just had to be there"

Mostly though, what Lee said to me really hit home in the race.

                                   Pressure

Pressure from my coach made me go out pretty hard. I thought I could probably manage 4:25 min/km pace over a half marathon but my coach wanted to see what I could do when I really push myself. He kind of has a point because I always play it safe and go out really easy, coming home with a nice negative split and just trying to speed up the pace by a few seconds each time I race.

My first half marathon in 2002 went pretty well, and I finished in 1h 52 min from the gun. (I was in the "lost start data" group but I started way at the back.)  I knew that this time I would be able to do 1 h 40 min no worries, so I thought I should just give it a shot - I headed out   at 4:15 pace.

I was in trouble early on

I hit the 5 km mark right on pace but already I was starting to doubt my ability to hold it until the end. I was out of my comfort zone in a big way. The pace group was really throwing my rhythm, with people continually speeding up, jumping in front and then slowing down and blocking me in.
